Researcher:
“I didn't really know what the system was doing here” Is it important for you? To know?

Participant 3:00
I think so, yeah, yeah. Well, I would prefer that I. I guess what the system was doing, I couldn't understand. And I think you might not know what they're doing, but then at least you understand what they're going for. Like, what sort of thing? That's right.

Researcher 3:24
Do you think that with a human For instance, if a person, if another person was playing with you, and you didn't know also? No, all. But you kind of know what we're saying is correct. With a person you may not know, but you understand?

Participant 3:41
Yeah. Yeah. So I might not necessarily know what they're going to do. But I can, I think it's, it's easier to understand what they're doing. Ask compared to something like this.

Researcher 3:54
Could you give me an example of how with a person? Yeah, that could be a case?

Participant 4:00
Well, there could be playing in like a scale or something in some some sort of tonal mode. But then here, it's like very atonal, I would say. So that what the system is playing back to me, there's like, none of the music structure that I would expect, like maybe a human would

Researcher 4:22
I understand. From a person you will understand at least the musical structure, even if it doesn't make sense with what you're playing.

Participant 4:29
Yeah, yeah. So I guess like, if they play something that I wouldn't play myself, I would still have some kind of understanding of what they're doing.

Researcher 4:42
Okay, that makes sense. Yeah. Okay. I like to listen. Okay. So that's, that's all the system right? Okay. Do you like that? A

Participant 4:59
yeah, because it played an earlier chord that I played back at a good time, I guess,

Researcher 5:04
so you have already played that chord? And? And it was a good timing.

Participant
Yes.

Researcher
was it just after you have done it or was later

Participant
I think I tried playing something and then it played the chord.

Researcher
So here you said "I had more success when I was playing the melody and the system was playing the acommpaniment part, it will have been good, if there was a way for me to communicate to the system". So which, if you had... What do you want it to communicate to the system at that moment?

Participant 5:55
I Guess, don't play, Don't play the melody, don't play on top register, play in the bottom register. Okay. And I'm just gonna play in the top register.

Researcher 6:05
If you are with a person, for instance, and you wanted to communicate the same, how would you do it? Can you just say, in an improvisation, you don't say things? Is there any way to gesture? Like a nonverbal? Well, yeah.

Participant 6:23
I can think of it. So off the top of my head, I can think of I've seen jazz performances were my piano duet. So there's two people playing piano. And then so one person will play the bass plot and one person will play the melody on top. Okay, and then in the middle of the performance, They would switch around. So they would say, like the base that, say the piano was here. Yeah. So someone here playing with melting pot, they would communicate with each other, and then like, the bass would shift, we actually move they actually move around. They will switch around and insert. The person playing the compliment is now playing the melody. And then they do this without really speaking.

Researcher 7:15
But do you think is that rehearse? I mean, do they know that when they give like a signal like I think they would switch? Yeah.

Participant 7:23
So they would know that and it's not necessarily rehearsed? It's like, it's, it's just something that's convention? I think,

Researcher
Ok. Is there a kind of signal for that?

Participant
I think so they look at each other, and then like, the bass player will play off with. And then yeah.

Researcher 7:45
Okay. Okay, that's interesting. How could you do with a system actually? That is the same is the same. These

Participant 8:00
So I was thinking, if the AI detects that you're just playing the top register, maybe you can avoid playing notes in the area that you're playing. Okay. Okay.

Researcher 8:17
Can you both? Is his and this is a question because I don't know much about music. So what you're saying is that in a performance, the musicians will never play in the same register?

Participant 8:33
Yeah, generally. So like, if one instrument is playing the melody, then maybe other instruments will give away to the instrument. So like they are not playing the same. They don't want to like overlap with. Okay. Yeah. So like in jazz music, if someone's doing a solo, then everyone stays quiet, or they play like, no more purchase stuff. So they don't want to overlap.

Researcher 8:57
Okay, yeah. Okay. That's good to know. What about if somebody wants to take over? Whatever, if somebody if the musician wants to take over like that when you learn the switch? Yeah. Yeah.

Participant:
So I think that's communication

Researcher
"it is quite difficult to play chords because the system will often play over it with different chords". Okay, no, this is due to the system not having any musical knowledge.

"Some of what the system play sounds a bit random, not necessarily something a human would play" Yeah. I mean, you're completely right. Because, again, the system doesn't have much, or any musical knowledge drive only what is learning for you. But when you say do you feel challenged, if it challenged by that

Participant 10:02
Yeah, I think so. I think I think this goes back to what we were saying before about, like, understanding. So because it's playing well, to me, like, a lot of random notes, it's a bit challenging to understand how that works

Researcher 10:17
challenging in a bad way. You cannot put in a good way you can say, I mean, this is, this is where we need to be honest.

Participant
So, I guess challenging in a bad way. In the negative way.

Researcher
"I would have like, a thing to signal the system that the performance was coming to an end", okay. said you wanted to, to end the performance and why. So the system kept playing or kept playing. And so so I guess my question is, because if you're playing with another person what happens if the person wants to keep playing. Would that happen?

Participant 11:11
that might happen, Yeah, then you would might need to negotiate with and continue on. But then generally, you can signal to the other person that it's coming to an end.

Researcher 11:22
And what kind of things ever happen? Okay, you can we should be recording. Okay, I see. I see. So if it What would you feel for instance? If there was a system like this that would take over control? Would you like it? Would you say no, we're not finishing with will keep you think, do you think that it will be in a bad way? or negative way, maybe because you don't want to play? No.

Participant 12:02
I think that will be okay. If if like some of the if I had more music knowledge, then I'll be okay with that. I think.

Researcher 12:13
Yeah, I see that the recording is two minutes. 20 because you ... why didn't you pay longer?

Participant 12:24
I feel like it was more or less the same thing being repeated. So. Yeah.

Researcher 12:31
Okay. Yeah. No, that's okay. Yeah. Perfect. Thank you so much. Let me finish
